Let There Be Light!

January 18, 2010

One of the features that we’ve been simultaneously loving and hating in our new house is the indoor laundry room.  For anybody that lives in the mid-west or on the East Coast, this probably doesn’t seem like anything to write home about.  However, here in Californ-I-A, we do things a little differently.  And by different, I usually mean weird.  In California, it’s very rare to have your laundry inside; it’s usually out in the garage with the dirt, the dust, the muck, and in our case—the GREASE!  One of the things that we L-O-V-E, love about our new home is that the laundry room is conveniently located inside, in the kitchen.

Now that I say that we love it, you’re wondering why we hate it…and the answer?  There’s no pantry in the kitchen.  I’ve had to use all of my mad kitchen arranging and organizing skills in order to finagle some space for our food in the kitchen cupboards.

So anyway, the point?  The laundry room is inside, and it’s darker than all get out.  Like really dark. I was folding t-shirts like they were towels, and underwear like they were socks.  Okay, not really—I know textures better than that!  Don’t believe me?  See if you can read the labels on the storage shelves.

You see my point.  So, with that in mind, we were determined to pull a “Creation, Day 1” event in our house, and get some light in there—using those handy-dandy outlets that you can almost see on the rear wall there.

Solution A: Call an electrician and have some lights installed.  Solution B: Use Katie’s dorm room light from college, which mounts on the wall and has a little screen over it.  Solution C: Under cabinet lighting.

Solution A: Uh, yeah.  Again, if you know us, you know we weren’t even close to seriously considering to this option since it would cost a pretty penny.

Solution B: Feasible, but perhaps a little ghetto?  And, one of the things we decided when we first moved in was now that we own our own place, we aren’t doing any more cheap fixes that look cheap. [To clarify, cheap fixes that look expensive are still a-okay!]

Solution C: Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

Okay, seriously though, for just a little bit of dough, we picked up these SWEET under cabinet lights at the local hardware store, and after holding them under the cabinets, decided they will look even better installed on the wall above the doors.  After some acrobatics, Chris had the lights successfully installed above the doors.  However, the project isn’t quite complete because we need to install a switch and hide the unsightly wiring with some wire moulding.

All in all?  A success!  Especially since last night I spilled rice all over the washer and dryer, and could see well enough to pick up each of the 300 grains that had spilled.  Oops!

I’ll share the “light” portion of this post when everything is complete…stay tuned!
